Structural functionalism explains that society is a whole with different structures that contribute to the whole and that is how society functions. In Lagaan, society was supposed to have been unified by the British through taxes and preventing Indians from rebelling, but when Bhuvan and his team won the game against the British, the functionalist world began to dissipate. The British-ruled India began to dissipate, while a new free India began to emerge and the structures of that society began to form into a strong society. Both class and race are considered structures in a functionalist society; because it is a way for us to be seen by others. We are selected based on our social class, race, family status, etc. We are then pushed to see if we can improve our class and move it up or fall to the bottom.
