    Abbot Suger wanted to make Saint Denis a magnificent showcase as the royal abbey church of France and burial place of the kings of France. The ribbed vault capable of extending over large areas was designed to enlarge Gothic churches. These Gothic churches were characterized by an enlarged clerestory area, windows of enormous size with a new inserted area and a triforium under the ribbed vaults and the support of an arcade of tall lined piers of the nave. These features made it possible to accommodate the greater stress of taller and wider interiors and create larger window areas as well as exterior supports. There was a greater sense of unity between the spaces of the nave and the adjacent ambulatory gateway and chapels. In the process, constructors became more complicated and were able to achieve larger and larger effects in various locations. These places include: Notre Dame de Paris in 1163, the cathedral of Amiens in 1220 and Sainte-Chappelle in 1243. In these places, the windows were enlarged with intensive use of stained glass, which reached the level of its development in the 12th and 13th centuries in Chartres and Sainte-Catherine. -Chapel. The sculptures outside and inside these churches were decorated. Large figures of the kings were placed on the facade, while the entrance was lined by the pillar – the statues of saints, angels and apostles and other parts of the buildings were covered with decorative cusps and finials. The revolutionaries of Gothic sculpture were beyond their Romanesque precursors in their conception of figures as independent. Gothic sculpture became more complex in later centuries. Gothic architecture transcended national boundaries and created organized labor. The Gothic period in Western European history was indicative of their dominance over world culture in the centuries to come. Gothic architecture showed Western Europeans that they were capable of great technical and artistic feats. This was when the region was emerging from the “dark ages”.
