During his service in the Continental Congress, Sherman played a crucial role in the Founding of the United States. In 1774, he signed the Continental Association adopted by the Continental Congress, which declared a trade boycott with the British government. Sherman later participated in the creation and signed two of the four most important documents in United States history: the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the Articles of Confederation (the first United States constitution after Independence) in 1781.
