  • Essay / Does poverty promote crime? - 1457

Can you believe that 60% of rural children in the United States live in poverty? Poverty is one of the many problems facing America today. So where does it all start? It starts with education. Education plays a huge role in this problem because most of America is not fully educated. They cannot find jobs to support their families, such as in agriculture, etc. So what about poor families who live in metropolitan areas? They face more problems than people in rural communities. They turn to crime because it is the only way they can provide for their homes and families. Looking at the causes of poverty, rural crime, health problems and statistics, we see that crime promotes poverty. There are many causes of poverty, starting with corruption. Corruption is deceptive conduct by those in power who attempt to keep those living in poverty trapped in their situation. When people think of corruption, they think of politics and wealthy leaders. Leaders of rich countries are informing those already living in poverty about the loans and aid they can offer. The less fortunate, little aware of what they are getting themselves into, dig a deeper hole by falling into debt. The leaders of these rich countries also make more money by taxing the less fortunate and receiving the money they lent them. Those who are already poor strive to support their families with the money they earn from their work. Many of them lack education, making it difficult to get well-paid jobs. “Poverty is the state of the majority of people and nations in the world. Why is this? Is it enough to blame the poor for their own situation? (“Causes of Poverty” 5) Therefore, corruption is a cause of poverty. Another cause of poverty is...... middle of paper ...... selling illegal things to support their family so that they can get proper treatment to survive. Many people living in these indigenous communities use health services less than those in modern communities because they cannot afford them. Looking at the causes, rural crime, health problems and statistics of poverty, we see that crime does indeed promote poverty. Works Cited “Causes of Poverty”. Global Issues, March 24, 2013. Web.
