Essay / a woman is driving home on the highway, she is hit head-on by a drunk driver and killed. The man is charged with two counts of murder; the woman and her four-week-old embryo inside her. The law guarantees every human being the right to life; born or unborn, they are equal. The same law should be applied regarding research on human embryonic stem cells. Dr. James A. Thomson discovered stem cells in 1998 and they have intrigued scientists ever since. The stem cells themselves are derived from a cluster of three- to four-day-old cells called a blastocyst, and they are so coveted because they are pluripotent, meaning they can differentiate into any type of stem cell. cell of the human body. Although embryonic stem cells have incredible potential to cure various diseases such as cancer, congestive heart failure, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, muscular dystrophies, etc. The methods by which they are obtained are controversial. Embryonic stem cell research is unethical, unnecessary and purely homicidal. There is no doubt that stem cell research is unethical on several counts. First, embryos are human beings and even though they are a few days old, they are not a "pre-embryo", a term indicating that after conception the embryo was actually no longer an embryo. Fortunately, this term is now known to be scientifically invalid. Once the Buntrock 2DNA is fully operational, “embryos are not simply biological tissues or clumps of cells; they are the smallest of human beings” (CBHD 2). Furthermore, embryo research constitutes a violation of human rights and there is no greater good in doing it in the name of medicine. There have been gross violations of human rights in the past and the destruction of an embryo to save...... middle of paper...... ific Society. October 13, 2010. The web. April 20, 2011.
