    Furthermore, children who obtain too little or too much gratification at a given stage of their development will become obsessed, unable to overcome the instincts of that stage. A person obsessed with a particular stage of development would adopt an oral, anal, or phallic personality type in an attempt to satisfy the instincts of that stage later in adulthood. An oral personality characteristic would manifest through safety issues, while an anal personality characteristic would manifest through power issues, and finally a phallic personality characteristic would manifest through sexuality.
