Violent video games have been proven to correlate with real-world violence and they should be blamed for the culture of violence that exists today. The government should take steps to monitor video game content and limit the distribution of video games with questionable content, as violent content leads to higher levels of aggression among children and adults, desensitizes them and encompasses inappropriate content . Violent video games lead to aggression. Children are very sensitive to the power of characters and the brutal environment that generate aggressive behavior and contribute to youth violence. According to Dr. Donald L. Hatcher, a 2011 study, games with violent themes hinder prosocial behaviors in children. They are more likely to confuse imagined violence with real-world violence, and without an ethical decision-making framework, they may imitate the actions they see in violent video games (Violent Video Game Regulations 2003). As Elizabeth Carll points out, violent video games require active participation, repetition, and identification with the violent character. With new game controllers allowing for more physical interactions, the immersive and interactive features of video games may increase the risk of violence among youth (Rehearsing Aggression 2007). Lawrence Kutner and Cheryl K. Olson pointed out that the increase in bullying cases can be partially attributed to the popularity of violent video games. In 2008, a Grand Theft Childhood study found that 60% of middle school boys who played at least one adult-rated game demonstrated aggressive and violent behavior, compared to 39% of boys who did not (The Surprising Truth 2008). So, do people have to live with occasional acts of violence as the cost of living in a free society? The sophistication of video games is such now that in fact no one can say where it will end. The respect that is garnered is that if someone takes hold of something that is truly incredibly violent, and people can see the difference in the last ten years, they see how war videos and war games have gone from the violence of then to the violence of today. Can the government guarantee that in fifty years people will not face a tsunami of violence in their homes that will corrupt an entire generation of children? This is the real problem.
