By doing this, the child would save his parents from years of heartache and regret, but would ultimately lead to the end of his own existence. This is a striking example of internal conflict, described as "the psychological struggle in the mind of a literary or dramatic character, the resolution of which creates the suspense of the plot" ("Internal Conflict"). The poet chose to use the internal conflict to show and highlight the emotional distress and emotional struggle she goes through to decide which of her parents and her own.
