Essay / George Bush's speech after the September 11 terrorist attack
My fellow Americans, Today we are witnessing a direct attack on our freedom. At 8:46 a.m., our country experienced deadly and intentional acts of terror. The attackers did not discriminate in their targets; passengers aboard the Boeing 767 that hit the north tower of the World Trade Center; to the many businessmen and women who were working inside the Pentagon when the third and final plane struck the three outer rings of the building's west block; our people have suffered a calamitous loss. We must not forget that these are the same planes we used to explore new worlds and new cultures. We must not forget that these planes, made of steel by the mortal hands of man, were used as weapons against their very creators. Thousands of tons of steel were incinerated in the evil flames that ravaged the corridors of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. These corridors housed mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters, walls held together by the blood and tears of the hardworking people of this great nation. These walls have fallen. They will rise again, supported by the hands of the strongest people in the world. Why are we the strongest of all people? The determination and perseverance that courses through the veins of the American people are proof enough that we are the strongest. No calamity, no matter how great, will stop this from flowing through our veins. It is the same perseverance and determination that founded the ground we walk on today. The very place we call home. Our house was attacked today in an attempt to scare us. They believed this would cause chaos and retreat. They failed. Our country remains strong. The relentless strength and resilience of our great people will continue to fuel the engine that powers this country. The steel that melted today is a reminder that this country was forged by the steel of man. It is man who creates his future and it is man who can destroy it. This attack proved that even the foundations of our strongest and tallest buildings can be shaken, but the foundations of a strong country, with an even stronger people, will withstand the sands of time. The United States Government has concluded that it was this base that made our country the target of this attack. By being the global benchmark for opportunity and strength, we have become a target for adversaries who want this title for themselves. We were tested today, someone, something tried to come and take our title. They won't have it. These standards have been engraved in the soil of this earth and will not be tarnished by anyone. God has blessed us with fertile and abundant soil, and it is He alone who creates and destroys man. These tyrants have fulfilled God's duty and they will be punished by the Almighty himself. The FBI and CIA have all the resources necessary to find those responsible for this direct violation of human life. To the people living in the lands occupied by terrorists, who are desperately trying to destroy evil, the evil influence that weighs on them; The United States is committed to ridding you of this evil. The United States is committed to ridding the world of this scourge. The war on terrorism has reached its climax. Not only fighting it on enemy soil, but also ravaging the very land our children will grow up in, this has become.
