Essay / Having read the many works of Edgar Allan Poe in my short life, I am confused by ideas about who Poe is and why he wrote such aberrant works. Looking back on the stories of “The Mask of the Red Dead” and “The Cask of Amontillado,” Poe speaks of morbid, even horrible deaths, dark landscapes and grave misfortunes. Is Poe an evil and disturbing soul? Letters have been written and the mystery of the great detective writer needs to be solved to interpret the truth found within; the writings are an excellent key to answering the riddle. Are his works evidence of his grief or simply the brilliant spirit of the forefathers of dark romanticism? If you examine the chronology of Poe's writings and cross-reference the details of the works with the life he led, you will understand more deeply the reality of the man, the myth and the legend. Poe wrote his feelings in works. He was not absent in heart or soul. He was neither evil nor unjustly malicious. Poe was born in 1809, his mother and father both died three years after his birth. Placed in a new family, where he was never entirely welcome, he lived a life in search of happiness, wealth and success. As if his private life wasn't enough for Poe, he was absolved of his engagement when his fiancée took another man. “Humiliated by his poverty and furious with Allan for not providing sufficient funds in the first place, Poe returned to Richmond and visited the home of his fiancée Elmira Royster, only to discover that she had become engaged to another man in the absence of Poe. Heartbroken Poe's final months in the Allan mansion were punctuated by growing hostility towards Allan until Poe finally stormed... middle of paper ...... without the suffering that he endured, we would not have the works of today. To have the strength he possessed and to write with dignity is the beauty of the man's caliber and the grace of his definition. Poe was not a madman, but a madman. Angry and enlightened, he was a powerful force of immortal prose that the world would remember eternally. Works Cited Britannica, Encyclopedia. “Plague in the 19th century: (1) 1800-45.” 2005.
