Essay / Integrity and servant leadership in Leadership Jazz, by...
Leadership JazzIntroductionA leader is made up of many qualities. Max Depree is the author of Leadership Jazz. In this novel, Depree talks about leadership and how it is an art. Depree really digs deep into leadership and gives many insightful examples. It showed me that leadership is much more than I initially thought. Integrity and servant leadership are one of the most important characteristics of a leader. A leader needs integrity because it is an essential part of being reliable and trustworthy. An example of integrity is when a leader says they are going to do something, then they actually follow through on what they said. A leader with integrity will be consistent in all his actions. Their values and principles will match their methods. Being a servant leader means that the leader does not view himself as too good to accomplish the tasks he asks of his followers. A servant leader will accomplish the task even if it seems beneath him. An example of a leader is a nurse. A nurse is a leader for a certified nursing assistant (CNA). A nurse can be a servant leader by bathing a patient and changing bedding, although this is usually the job of a CNA, this nurse did not consider herself too good to do "dirty" work . A leader is willing to help and follow through. These two characteristics help followers trust the leader. It also helps to build a strong foundation for a good relationship between the leader and his followers. Dignity of LeadershipMy dignity, for me, is extremely important. Everyone deserves to be respected. I agree with Depree's definition of dignity. A good leader will respect his followers when it comes to the middle of paper and the decision will be black and white. When things don't seem clear, it's important to be flexible. In times of change, not everything will be clear. The leader must work with the team to maintain open communication so that everyone can be on the same page and get through difficult times together. “Thinking broadly and deeply – being able to see the big picture and not just the small details.” Throughout the novel, Depree brings up this idea. It's important to have an overview because it shows how well everything is working. If a leader focused on every little detail, nothing would ever get done on time. It takes change to grow and focusing on all the little details won't achieve that. Delegation is also important for a leader because it is teamwork and it allows the leader to focus on something bigger..
