Often, when a child is upset or angry, they tend to lash out and may become violent. According to Webster's dictionary, violence is defined as the use of physical force with the aim of harming someone or something. Violence is a very extreme form of rebellion on the part of children or even adults. Children often become violent when they use negative reinforcement. Violence itself can be completely eliminated through positive reinforcement. In any situation where a child is wrong, instead of telling him he is wrong and upsetting and irritating him, let him think and, after self-reflection, use positive reinforcement to reinforce that right self-reflective behavior. According to the Doing What Works Library, some of the positive reinforcements that can be used after a desired behavior occurs are smiling, giving that child a special privilege and free time.
