Essay / The high cost of obesity - 1696
Today, as living standards continue to improve, weight gain and obesity pose a growing threat to some countries' well-being from all over the world. Obesity, now confirmed to be endemic nationwide by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is likely to worsen and increase over time. “The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that there will be 2.3 billion overweight adults worldwide by 2015 and that more than 700 million of them will be obese” (Obesity: in Statistics, 2008, 2nd statement). It is certain that most children are inclined to eat junk food, and it is certain that most children will become overweight as adults. About 15% of children and adolescents ages 6 to 19 are overweight, representing a 4% increase from the 1988 to 1994 NHANES study” (Chatterjee, Blakely, & Barton, 2005, p. 24) . In the United States alone, statistics for obese people are also higher in certain cultural and ethnic minority groups, particularly African Americans and Hispanics. 21.8%. This represents almost a quarter of the population! Among all low-income children, the prevalence of overweight was found to be highest among Latino children (12%), followed by Asian-Pacific Islander children (9.6%), Afro- Americans (7.8%) and Whites (7.1%)” (Chatterjee, Blakely, & Barton, 2005, p. 24) “By some estimates, the total cost of obesity is $100 billion per year . Others estimate that the health care cost for obesity alone is $70 billion” (Wellman, Friedberg, S705, 2002). Obesity and its economic costs occur at three levels. First, obesity can harm a person financially, due to doctor visits, etc. Second, obesity can reduce business costs (assuming that overweight people are functioning, but they may not be, due to their condition), due to a loss of efficiency. There are approximately 40 million workdays of productivity lost among overweight people. Other problems include absenteeism, underachievement and increased insurance payments. (Wellman, Friedberg, 2002, p.705) Additionally, being overweight has an effect on neighboring, state and national government spending. Obesity is my subject of interest because as a future primary school teacher, I want to raise children's awareness of the consequences that obesity can have in children. I hope to teach all children the importance of eating healthily so that they can grow into happy, healthy adults. Obesity is a huge problem that is heavily influenced by sociological factors such as media and American culture..
