This review is for any film critics who want to know my opinion on how the film turned out. It is also aimed at those who want to know a little more about the film before watching it or are curious about the film, such as the genre and plot. This film stars 5 main actors, Thomas Mollison (Rhys Wakefield), Charlie Mollison (Luke Ford), Maggie Mollison (Toni Collette), Simon Mollison (Erik Thomson) and Jackie Master (Gemma Ward). Thomas had a lot of responsibilities on his back because his father is enlisted in the army and his mother is pregnant so he was the only one to take care of his brother at home while his father is at work and his mother is rests. We then get a glimpse of Charlie's behavior (who is autistic) and how Thomas is very frustrated with having to juggle his social life and his frustrating home life, having to look after his brother. About a third of the movie we learn about Thomas' school life and how everyone in his school teases the students at the school Charlie goes to, simply because they were born with a disability. However, they don't know that Thomas' brother, Charlie, is going there. Thomas therefore tries to keep a low profile and not let anyone know that he has an autistic brother. At this point in the film, Thomas meets Jackie, one of his swimming classmates and he really likes her. However, Thomas fears that Charlie will be an embarrassment to him and that Jackie would not like him back because of her brother's behavior. After Charlie's behavior begins to worsen and crosses the line at Thomas' birthday party, in front of Jackie, Thomas decides he has had enough and confronts Charlie about it. This confrontation ends in chaos between the whole family who are expecting a new addition to the family. Fear is one of the themes because Tom has always been afraid that those around him will always judge him because of his autistic brother. Family is also a theme in the film “The Black Balloon”. We know this by watching how Charlie's family supports him no matter what and is always there when the people around Charlie judge him for being autistic. Brotherhood: Tom who is Charlie's brother always supports Charlie and puts up with his behavior and even if halfway through the film he hates being Charlie's brother, at the end he ends up loving his brother more than before. The Black Ball is placed under the category of drama, romantic and independent films by most authentic movie review websites such as IMDB. I think this movie fits perfectly into the family genre category and the movie not only focuses on a serious topic/message but also features comedic, romantic and then serious scenes. This movie fits well in the drama category because the mood of the movie goes up and down like a roller coaster, which makes the movie very dramatic, which people love because the drama has a little bit of everything. One of the things I really liked was how the director portrayed the message of the film through drama and showed comedic, romantic and serious scenes. The director could have made the film sad by simply showing the negative effects of autism on the family. This film presents a family drama, which occurs when there is a major conflict between the members..
