  • Essay / Working Women vs. Housewife - 1364

As women, we are always looking for a way to be better versions of ourselves. In a very broad spectrum, we are meant to be the superwoman of all aspects of life. Women were thus called created on this earth to be submissive and servants to their family. During the 1900s, women began to feel trapped and believed that they had to follow in the footsteps of their ancestors, but on the other hand, they slowly began to become active women, stepping out of the role of housewife and mother. When I started reading women's magazine 1940-1960, gender roles and popular press, I had the overwhelming feeling that someone was telling me how to be a woman and what role a woman should play in society . In the Women in the Workplace chapter, this really struck me. First, he started talking about women in politics and how they didn't have the brain power to work in a man's field; because all they would do is co-sign their husband's beliefs. Also how women could become a powerful force if they became united. When this became clearer to me, I thought that perhaps Mrs. Roosevelt had some sort of individuality in her body to express herself apart from her husband. As a woman, I completely agree that it is difficult to get along with us and reach agreement after disagreement. Also, I'm not trying to contradict myself, but also going deeper as I read the section. I felt that Mrs. Roosevelt also preyed on women rather than uplifting them; How could she denounce women by denying them a certain type of competence when she was also trying to find her own voice and individuality. Then there is even more brainwashing talk about what a woman should...... middle of paper......an. I believe that in certain areas of America and in certain types of religions and backgrounds, the status quo is still present. The only surprising thing about the book was how backward the world thought and how long it took women to gain voices there. And how, when we gained our independence and personal satisfaction, we became a force to be reckoned with against men. I also learned that the media has played an essential role in our lives for years and still does today. As for my rating of the book, I give it one star because I am more interested in empowering women and not degrading them; because women are very strong individuals, the United States is a matriarchy, women rule the world, men just like to fight over who is right and who is wrong. Above all, I leave with the desire to try harder to achieve my goals as a woman so that all the hard work of women before me is not in vain..
