  • Essay / Essay on Ee Cummings, the Rebel Writer - 889

EE Cummings – The Rebel Writer. E. Cummings was one of the best writers of his time. Having no limits in his writing, he had the right to go anywhere in the world of literature. He played with punctuation and imagery in almost every poem he wrote. He was very rebellious when it came to writing and wanted to step out of the comfort zone of English literature. During his life he wrote many extraordinary and fantastic works inspired by many different personal experiences, from supporting his mother to being held in prison. This is just the story of an incredible writer and where his ideas may have come from. Edward Estlin Cummings was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on October 14, 1894 (Dendinger). He was the firstborn in the family and had only one other brother (Dendinger). His father, Edward Cummings, was a Harvard graduate, ordained Unitarian minister, and pastor of the South Congregational Church (Dendinger). Rebecca Haswell Clarke spent her time as a housewife encouraging Cummings to become the poet he was (Goldfarb). Earlier in his life, he mainly played with children of other Harvard graduates, growing him in the environment (Goldfarb). ). Some believe this is one of the reasons he became a writer, but others believe it is because of his mother's support during his younger years. Rebecca Clarke encouraged her son to start a dairy at the age of six and continued to do so until he was thirteen (Goldfarb). He began publishing his work in high school when he began writing for the newspaper (Goldfarb). Cummings continued to write throughout college whenever he published articles in Harvard's two literary periodicals (Goldfarb). Cummings rebelled at his university...... middle of paper ...... s, the mood abruptly changes and surprises the audience as none of them believe that the main hero can die ( Rollyson). This creates a feeling of falsity among the audience. Cummings also makes it known that although Buffalo Bill was handsome and attractive, his appearance did nothing to help him stay alive, breaking all the rules of a traditional heroism story (Rollyson). The most famous literary device used by Cummings, however, was his use of odd and unusual punctuation. In his review, Carl Rollyson said: "Cummings is known as a poet who attacks conventional uses of grammar, and he transforms capital letters, hyphens, apostrophes, and spaces between words into new uses." (Rollyson). He separates sentences in strange ways and where other authors would put punctuation, Cummings puts nothing (Rollyson). His use of crossing limits is very important in his poems..
