My Brother Sam is Dead The story of “My Brother Sam is Dead” takes place in colonial America. It takes place in 1775 in Redding, Connecticut, where the story follows the main character Tim and his family going through the Revolutionary War. Tim doesn't really pay attention to all the politics and war, but his family does. His father in particular is a British loyalist. The first big event in the story occurs (page 13) when Tim's brother Sam returns from Yale. The family is having dinner on Sam's first day back when he breaks the news. Sam seems zealous and announces that he will enlist and fight the British. This obviously scandalizes the father, but not Tim. This makes Tim look up to his older brother. Later, he and his father start an argument that is sure to happen. the next day, after church, Sam runs away, just after stealing his father's gun. Sam then leaves Redding to fight and things become more difficult, gradually tearing the family apart. Sam comes back from time to time, although when he does, Tim is the only one who talks to him. Sam and his father are too stubborn to call a truce. Later in the story (page 64) While Tim and his father are selling beef to British Loyalists in New York when Mr. Meeker is kidnapped by a gang of cowboys, Tim outwits them and escapes. Tim must then bring all the goods home himself. this helps him mature a bit by making him take more responsibility in their family tavern. In the spring of 1777, British soldiers in prodigious numbers entered their hometown of Reddin...... middle of paper ..... .eve, this incredibly obvious title actually has several meanings. It was in this context that the British massacre occurred. They also use New York as the location where Tim's father is harassed and kidnapped by rebels.
