Essay / Has society treated men and women equally over the years? During the most inhumane, barbaric and sadistic period in history, women seem to be more mistreated. For many years, women were not only considered the weaker sex, but also repressed and dehumanized by male-dominated society. The impact of slavery on American slaves was as terrible as the Holocaust, which persecuted and killed millions of Jews and other groups considered undesirable. Slavery and male-dominated society occurred simultaneously; therefore, women were twice discriminated against, mistreated and abused. There are many indirect and direct accounts of the suffering women endured during this horrific and sad period in history. “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” by Harriet Jacobs happens to be a vivid account of the incidents in the life of Jacobs, an unfortunate girl who, as a child, tragically lost her parents and discovered that she was a slave. Referring to the terrible conditions of slavery, she wrote: “You never knew what it was to be a slave; be totally unprotected by law or custom; that the laws reduce you to the state of movable property, entirely subject to the will of others. (49) Perhaps the most heartbreaking feeling in the lives of female slaves was the fact that they were separated from their children by the will of their masters. Not being able to raise their children was a hundred times more painful than cutting their heel cords to keep them from escaping their masters. Jacob's grandmother experienced this horrible consequence of slavery when her master died and her five children were divided among the master's heirs. (9) How painful it must have been for Jacob's mother to see her children divided as if they were... middle of paper... in labor, had built a comfortable home for themselves, were forced to sacrifice their furniture, hastily bidding farewell to friends, and seeking his fortune among strangers in Canada. Many women discovered a secret they never knew before: her husband was a fugitive and had to leave her to ensure his own safety. Worse still, many husbands discovered that his wife had fled slavery years ago, and because "the child follows the condition of his mother," his love's children were at risk of being seized and taken into slavery." (155). , grief and shame are projected throughout Jacob's book which covers not only his life, but also the common misfortune of many victims of slavery. Undoubtedly, female slaves were repeatedly abused, discriminated against and harassed not only by society but also by sadistic masters, thus becoming the most abused in a slave society..
