The White House which is strictly political, and the White Houses which are both political and cultural. It becomes political when the McKay says, “To compel me to obey the letter of your law” (Locke 134). This line refers to the law of the land, but what's fascinating about this line is that it involves the word "your." Using your also makes it cultural because African Americans were not politically incorporated. This eventually became a cultural issue because of Jim Crow laws. One of the provisions of Jim Crow was the literary test. And if a person could not read or write, they ultimately would not be able to vote (Ferris 2016). Therefore, since many African Americans could not vote due to cultural norms, why should they follow American law if they did not have the right to vote ?
