A breath of fresh air is my right: smoking ban in public placesIs it right that this person gets sick too, because they are around smokers? Over the years, countless medical studies have proven the link between smoking and worsening health of the smoker. According to Mazzone and Arroliga (2004), “nearly 450,000 people will die each year from a disease attributable to smoking. In the United States, smoking kills more people each year than AIDS, suicide, murder, car accidents, and illicit drugs combined” (para. 1). However, subsequent research also highlights its detrimental effects on the population, environment and workplace. For this apparent reason, legislative and judicial laws should be enacted to legitimize a total ban on smoking in order to prevent the spread of disease, preserve the environment and promote the right to a conducive and healthy working environment. Smoking in public should be banned so as not to affect another person's health. Environmental smoke (ES) or second-hand smoke (SH) is the main cause of heart attacks not only in active smokers but also in passive smokers. In addition, it is one of the aggravating causes of respiratory and circulatory diseases in children, such as asthma, bronchitis and lung infections. In a study by Simons, Moineddin, Stieb, and Dell (2014) on maternal exposure to second-hand smoke and its association with the development of childhood asthma, results indicated that "children whose mothers are exposed to second-hand smoke second-hand smoke in the home during pregnancy are more likely to develop doctor-diagnosed asthma and to develop asthma earlier, even if the mother does not actively smoke during pregnancy” (para. 30). Furthermore, in the case of ...... middle of paper ...... icy are developed in more detail in the study by Fichtenberg and Glantz who conclude that "smoke-free workplaces not only protect non-smokers of the dangers of passive smoking, they also encourage smokers to stop or reduce their consumption” (2002, para.8). Thus, banning smoking in the workplace would contribute to a change in people's smoking behavior, which, in the long term, would help them to quit smoking. It is said that “tobacco companies kill their best customers”. Therefore, the implementation by governments and legislators of a complete restriction of smoking in public places will be very beneficial for the well-being and quality of life of others, environmental conservation and prevention business losses. They could quit smoking by adhering to these restrictions now or they could die trying to give up their deadly relationship with nicotine..
