Essay / Unique Conversations: The Role of Deaf Education in...
Susan Scott (2017) emphasized that fierce conversations are not cruel, brutal, or angry conversations, but rather powerful and intense conversations. I believe the school's vision and mission are a starting point where we can begin fierce conversations with the entire community about our school's vision and how it can align with academic rigor. In fact, what matters everywhere in a school community matters everywhere in a school community, and this requires effective communication to optimize dialogues between stakeholders. Susan Scott (2017) suggested a method that promotes dialogues within the school community: the Beach Ball model. She compared an organization to a beach ball with six different colored stripes. For the school community, each band represents a specific group of people within the community, and each group is on a different band and experiences reality from that perspective. For example, a group of parents might be on the red band, students on the blue band, and teachers on the yellow band. Indeed, they are part of the school community, but they experience reality from a completely different perspective. Using this model, I can enhance the vision and mission of the school where a shared understanding of rigor is needed.
