    The stress and strain of life's obstacles sometimes throw us off course. Rivers have always seemed to play a major role in religion. The Bible says that Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist on the banks of the Jordan River and that as Jesus prayed, the heavens opened. In the Hindu religion, they believe in seven sacred rivers; Hindus believe that bathing in the Ganges will cleanse them of their sins. It seemed essential to me to illustrate a stable boat in my drawing of a river of spirituality. I believe our spiritual journey takes most of us down a multitude of river paths. Some rivers have clear skies with rocks along the way; other streams provide irregular lightning. My grandmother told me: “Isaiah, your life will flash before your eyes. I was close to my grandmother throughout my childhood. When I was eight years old, my teacher asked me to write a story about my favorite person. I remember the project requirements like it was yesterday. I went to the stationery store with my grandmother and she bought some red construction paper. I had the whole weekend to create the story; It was a difficult decision for me, it was the first time I had to choose among my family members. I weighed the pros and cons of the memories I had with all my loved ones and it came down to my grandmother. I created a two column layout, drew my grandmother and myself on the left side and wrote the story on the right side. On Monday morning, I woke up an hour earlier than usual. I was excited to present my story to my classmates. My teacher liked the story, although a few of my classmates didn't understand why I didn't choose my mother instead. (Bender, 1997, p. 120). I believe that Sue Bender realized how simple it was to recognize the existence of God in the same way that I do: by simply analyzing what we have and being grateful for it. At the age of seventeen, I began to live my life without regretting my past mistakes.
