    HER PEOPLE'S MOSES 1HER PEOPLE'S MOSES 2Who is Harriet Tubman?Araminta Harriet Ross, formerly known as Harriet Tubman, was born a slave in March 1820 in Dorchester County, Maryland (Civil War, 2014). As a child, Tubman was “rented out” to various masters who were mean and cruel to her (Civil War, 2014). She suffered a terrible head trauma inflicted by one of these cruel slave masters that left her with seizures and "visions" for the rest of her life, which she believed were sent from God (Civil War, 2014) . In 1840, Tubman's father was granted freedom following a stipulation in his master's will, but continued to work for his former owner's family (Civil War, 2014). Araminta and the rest of his family were supposed to enjoy freedom as well, but the law was ignored and kept the rest of the family enslaved (Civil War, 2014). In 1844, Araminta married a free black man and changed her name from Araminta Ross to Harriet Tubman (Civil War, 2014). In 1849, Tubman became seriously ill due to complications from her head injury, causing her owner to decide to sell her, but he was unable to find a buyer (Civil War, 2014). After his own sudden death, the family began selling all of their slaves (Civil War, 2014). Not wanting the rest of her family to be separated, Tubman was determined to escape (Civil War, 2014). The Underground RailroadHarriet Tubman escaped slavery in 1849, fleeing to Philadelphia (Biography, 2014). She initially left Maryland with two of her brothers, Ben and Henry, on September 17, 1849, in a notice published in the Cambridge Democrat offering a $300 reward for the return of Harriet, Harry and Ben (Bio, 2014) .
