  • Essay / My motivation for studying medicine

Most people want to change lives, I want to save lives. My decision to study medicine was not an impulsive, event-driven decision, nor was it something I had wanted to do since I was a child. The internships, professional experience and many reflections on my life in this profession have made me determined to study medicine. Say no to plagiarism. How is it that the smallest antibody, the slightest cramp, the slightest mutation, can cause such profound effects in this sensitive mass of cells that we call the human body? My curiosity drives me to seek answers to these questions. Even though the path to becoming a doctor is very difficult, I know that this is where I belong. I was supposed to go on this journey and I was supposed to fall in love with medicine. I feel so lucky to know where I need to be and to be able to pursue a vocation that I was lucky enough to fall in love with. Unfortunately, in the last two years, the deaths of two close family members from cancer and a car accident led to my debacle. Since I was at residential school, I have felt a sense of guilt when I lost my grandfather to cancer. The following year, I returned home and witnessed the loss of my cousin. These two tragedies cost me dearly. I was derailed and unfocused. It took me a long time to get back on track. Today, however, I am strong and independent, ready to take on whatever life throws at me. I believe my family members could have been saved. It was the lack of medical care that led to their disappearance. It's not just my family, many cities and towns in India lack advanced medical technologies and manpower. This is a deciding factor for me. I want to work for the improvement of areas like these all over the world. Over the last two years, I have discovered the world of doctors, shadowing a pediatrician, a dermatologist, a gynecologist and a neurosurgeon. Through these enriching experiences, I learned that a doctor's communication skills are not only used to cooperate effectively with colleagues, but also to alleviate patient discomfort. I concluded that an effective doctor cares about his or her patients and addresses all of a patient's concerns. Keep in mind: this is just a sample. My passion for performing in front of people gave me self-confidence. I am also part of a dance club, where I help mentor the younger members of my club, using the interpersonal and leadership skills I will need as a physician to connect with patients and contribute effectively to a team. Recently, I also held a management position in a retail company. The internship helped me improve my communication skills and made me a better team player. Medicine is the profession that best places scientific ability in a deeper social context, allowing me to remain a scientist at heart while fulfilling my desire to work with people in a caring role. With my professional experience, research and reading, I am convinced that this is my calling, and it is the career that I will enjoy the most as well as the one for which I am.
