Many, if not all, of the working classes believe that it is time to change the French social and political system. Alexandre Manette was a prisoner in the Bastille (French symbol of royal authority) for 18 years. He is eventually released and travels to London with Jariv's truck from Tellson Bank, who had raised his daughter since Manette's imprisonment. Since Alexander has been imprisoned for so long, he has lost touch with the life, love, rest, duty, and comfort that his daughter helps bring out in him. Five years later, in 1780, Charles Darnay was accused of treason but was saved. of the execution when his lawyer, Sydney Carton, argues that he and Darnay look a lot alike, so how could the prosecutor be sure that Darany was indeed the spy. Carton, his boss Stryver and Darany are all in love with Lucie and she chooses Darnay and they are married. Darnay reveals his identity to Lucie's father, Alexandre Manette. Darnay is actually Charles Saint-Evremonde, who is the nephew of the Marquis Saint-Evremonde. Marquis Saint-Évrémonde was the man responsible for the imprisonment of Dr. Alexandre Manette. Upon hearing this, Manette returns to her old prison habits and makes shoes for nine days before pulling herself together and joining the couple on their honeymoon. Upon his return, Carton visits him and asks for friendship, which Darnay also accepts. In the year 1789, Madame Defarge and her husband led an attack on the Bastille, and the French Revolution began. The revolutionaries start killing aristocrats and nobles in the streets. A maintenance man from the Evrémonde estate, named Gabelle, was imprisoned and five years later wrote to Darnay to request his release. Darnay, knowing the risks, nevertheless decides to help him and leaves for France. Upon his arrival, he is arrested and tried for the wrongs his ancestors committed many years previously against Madame Defarge's parents. He is then sentenced to death within twenty-four hours. Carton goes to visit Darnay in prison and convinces him to trade clothes with him. He then drugs Darnay and the guards thinking he is Carton escorts Darney to a waiting car where he is taken safely..
