    Another advantage of rule utilitarianism over act utilitarianism is that it does not reject past obligations in order to increase total well-being, and that it also does not sacrifice the happiness of each person. in relation to another, as Act-Utilitarianism does. Rule utilitarianism allows certain freedoms in moral beliefs that would allow us to fully appreciate life, while still living a moral life in the face of ethical dilemmas. For example, a rule utilitarian might think that if everyone indulged in killing each other every time they were offended, then total welfare would decrease exponentially. Therefore, murder is immoral for the rule utilitarian. On the other hand, Act-Utilitarianism would authorize murder, or even one's own death if it increased the total.
