  • Essay / Documentary Film Analysis: Born Into Brothels directed...

This article examines reviews of the highly acclaimed documentary Born Into Brothels directed by Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman. This film follows Briski's attempt to save a group of children from Sonagachi by teaching photography and working to enroll these children in boarding schools. This article is divided into two main sections; the first part examines whether or not it is essential to remove these children from their homes in order to save them from their lives in India's red light district. The second part of this article examines what this documentary reveals overall about the policy of saving children from other cultures. Sonagachi is the red light district of India, which causes many concerns for children living in this city. This documentary, however, is praised for its beautiful visuals, children's charm, and heartwarming account of Briski's outreach efforts; this film is also criticized on several grounds. The following part of this article discusses the criticisms of the film and argues that removing the children from Sonagachi is not a necessity but rather there should be more focus on solutions for the community as a whole. This section of the article discusses Partha Banerjee's opinion. reviews of the film and supports the film's potential to play a more activist role in working toward a community solution rather than removing the children from Sonagachi. Partha Banerjee wrote a letter regarding the documentary Born Into Brothels to AMPAS, which is the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, this group organizes the Oscars. This documentary, however, highlights Briski's commendable awareness-raising work; it does not recognize the efforts made by the people of Sonagachi and it is...... middle of paper ...... people who reside in Sonagachi are working towards a community solution rather than removing the children from their homes to try to rescue them. The second part discusses the film's general opinion on the policy of saving children of other cultures and questions the suggestion that the only solution is help from Westerners to save these children from their situation. Born Into Brothels is a visually stunning film, however, it is flawed in its attempt to bring positive change to Sonagachi. Works Cited Briski, Z. and Kauffman R. (directors). (2004).
