JD Salinger is a defining American author who has an incredibly distinctive writing style. The elements of conflict and plot, choice of theme, and mood and tone of Franny and Zooey and Catcher in the Rye are extremely similar. The young man, Holden, from Catcher in the Rye and Franny from Franny and Zooey follow a similar plot which defines their personalities and especially their outlook on life. Additionally, the message of both books was comparable in that they were both about respecting people and allowing them to live their lives the way they wanted. Ultimately, the moods of the books are incredibly similar. In conclusion, there are clear parallels between the works of JD Salinger. To begin with, the plot of the two novels has certain parallels. Characters like Franny and Holden from both books view the word with extreme negativity. It takes their experiences and certain revelations to learn to appreciate the world as it is. Holden watches his sister Phoebe ride a carousel and experiences the simple pleasure of seeing someone he loves happy. This is the first and only time he smiles in the entire book. Additionally, Franny has the revelation that everyone is part of Christ and that she must respect them as a human being, even if she despises them. The conflict in both books is not being able to find a real reason to look at the world in a positive way. Holden says things like "If you sat there long enough and heard all the idiots clapping and everything, you'd have to hate everyone in the world, I swear" (Salinger 112). The conflict is resolved in a brief moment near the very end of either story when they finally understand a deeper intelligence that allows them to earn their own livelihood.
