Drug and substance dependence is defined as “a chronic, often recurrent brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and consumption, despite the harmful consequences for the addicted person and those around them” (“Understanding Drugs”, 2012). Commonly abused drugs and substances include alcohol, crack and cocaine, methamphetamine, painkillers and other prescription medications, stimulants, and more. Often people assume that addicts have no morals or willpower because they think people can change their behavior and stop using. drugs and substances whenever they want. However, “in reality, drug addiction is a complex illness, and quitting smoking takes more than good intentions or strong willpower. In fact, because drugs change the brain in ways that promote compulsive drug abuse, it is difficult to quit, even for those who are ready to do so” (“Understanding drugs,” 2012).
