  • Essay / The Truth About Prostitution - 882

The Truth About ProstitutionProstitution is a major problem in the United States today. The way we treat these victims like criminals is simply unacceptable. In Business Insider, a study of San Francisco prostitutes found that up to 68% of them have been raped and a staggering 82% have been assaulted. Also on Business Insider is a study of prostitutes in Colorado Springs, which shows that prostitutes are 18 times more likely to be victims of murder than those who do not prostitute themselves. So the question remains: what are we going to do about it? Legalizing prostitution would not only protect these women and give them the chance to seek safety and justice, but also boost the economy and reduce the spread of STDs. When it comes to prostitution, there is a big taboo button ready to go off every time someone brings it up. but what if it was a normal subject? The porn industry has always been legal, bringing in as much as $10 billion in the United States in 2007. This revenue decreased by almost 50% between 2007 and 2011, due to all the free pornography on the Internet. This creates a need for additional income, and they weren't lying when they said "Sex sells." If it's filmed, paid sex is legal and even a hot topic. So what makes prostitution so different? Well, people believe that the porn industry is a normal part of life and has always existed, while prostitution is illegal and therefore looked down upon. People are so caught up in what they know that they don't realize that it's actually less vulgar. Paying a woman or man to please you sexually is more personal than paying a couple of strangers to have sex with a film crew watching you, and yet people find it more disturbing because... . middle of paper ...... their work. Currently, people who engage in prostitution are often criminals and without regulation, the spread of STDs and other medical complications will occur. Without medical care, they will often have nowhere to turn and will go untreated. Legalizing prostitution is the right thing to do, not only for all the children and adults who suffer from the current conditions of prostitution, but also for the economy and the country as a whole. Stop letting people hide the truth about prostitution, let it be legal and not taboo. -content/uploads/2013/12/porn_stats_2013_covenant_eyes.pdf http://prostitution.procon.org/view.answers.php?questionID=000107http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2013/07/09/2270371/100000- children-are-forced-into-prostitution-every-year/#
