Essay / Damage caused by the tobacco epidemic - 778
“Smoking is not just suicide. It's murder. »A global epidemic threatens to change the course of our lives. The increase in cancer deaths has shaken the world and something must be done. In April 2008, this image was used as part of the public health and safety campaign called "Smoking is Murder." Paulino Caffarena, the illustrator, partnered with a non-profit health organization called Chilean Cancer Corporation, also known as CONAC, to sponsor the campaign. This image was used to raise awareness of the effects of passive smoking. In the image, a young boy cries helplessly as a cloud of cigarette smoke engulfs him. The cloud of smoke covers his face in the shape of a plastic bag, as if to show that he is suffocating from the smoke. His mouth wide open as he gasps for air amidst the falling tears and thick smoke. The image draws the viewer's attention to the young boy, while depicting him as a victim of someone else's life choices. The creator does this by showing the boy in front of a shadowed black background, which gives the image a feeling of despair and loss of hope. The dark background and shadows, the light on the child's face, and the portrait style image that shows no body allows the face to be the focal point of this image. With the child's face as the focal point, emotions can speak louder. Additionally, because the child's lower body is hidden, we cannot see what type of clothes he is wearing; this prevents the reader from judging the boy based on his social class. This allows this image to be more widely accessible and the pain and suffering on the child's face to make a stronger argument. Additionally, on the image are the words: “Smoking is not just suicide. It's murder. »Many people think middle of paper as long as people continue to smoke without caring about the effects of their actions. The destructive nature of smoking is easily overlooked when the effects it has on others are not visible or obvious. Neither the effects of direct or passive smoking can be visible nor the instantiations of the effects. With cancer being one of the leading causes of death worldwide, this vicious cycle will continue to destroy families and end lives if no action is taken. Paulino Caffarena and the Chilean Cancer Organization worked together to create a visually striking image to raise awareness of the effects of second-hand smoke. They have taken an effective stand against direct smoke, second-hand smoke and cancer. Fighting second-hand smoke and cancer may seem impossible, but as a community, working together can help make the world cleaner and safer..
