Essay / Analysis of Rubens Women by Wislawa Szymborska
It is composed of contradictory expressions such as “change so that nothing changes (Szymborska, 2000, p. 161).” The role of the woman in this poem seems to be the typical female character of having children, being submissive to the male, and reading the Ladies Home Journal for fun in her free time. The woman is “naive, but gives the best advice.” Weak, but will take anything. A screw loose and hard as nails. Naive, weak and a loose screw might be how a man describes her, but she would say she gives the best advice, has the will to face anything and is tough as nails . The last two lines of the poem say, "She must love him, or she's just stubborn." For better, for worse, for heaven's sake. For better, for worse, this is removed from a traditional wedding ceremony and since they are married, she is bound to him forever and it is her duty to love and please him. Although this depicted role of the wife is not as common in tradition today, because gender roles are not as defined in the postmodern era, there are still many male figures across the world who believe that this remains the supreme duty of the wife.
