I have found that I thrive when I am able to write about topics that I can personally relate to, such as a historical event or when I write in my journal about my inner thoughts and feelings. When I'm writing for myself, I never really know what I'm going to end up writing on a page until I've been able to create a paragraph and encourage other ideas. What I mean by that is that life experiences and communicating with others have taught me so much more.
