Observation: Three weeks ago, the children were able to open and close the boxes that I had incorporated into the musical instruments. They used the boxes as a musical instrument by tapping the bottom, using them as a tool for standing, or simply practicing opening and closing them. When I hid something in the box, they kept opening it and smiled when they opened it. In the room we had a large coffee can with a hole in the plastic lid. The children removed the blue plastic lid and poured the small metal lids onto the floor. The children also put the small metal lids into the holes in the plastic lid continuously while they made noise. Dialogue and reflection: Infants were engaged in functional play by listening to the sound of the lid as it hit the bottom (Lew, 2012). . Infants were also engaged in solitary play when they played with the toys without engaging with other infants (Lew, 2012). It seems that the children were interested in opening boxes and seeing what was in them. It seems that the children demonstrated their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination when they opened the boxes and tried to close them. Infants already experience mathematics in their daily lives. They practice this by involving touch, smell, and voice with their parents and caregivers (Lockwood, 2013). Infants learn mathematical connections through learning experiences. In my curriculum design class, I learned that by playing with a box, children can learn object permanence when we hide a toy inside (Lockwood, 2013). Children will be aware of their spatial sense when they hold on to the container or box of chocolate and notice its shape (Lockwood, 2013). According to Berk (2012), as infants learn to move on their own, their opportunities ...... middle of paper ...... container sticks. I will demonstrate how to roll the can and catch it to encourage them to crawl or walk. I will also show them how to open and close the containers. Challenges, I will challenge infants to pull or push the sticks through the plastic lids. Tell, explain and inform, as the children open, close, pull, push or roll the containers, I will name for them what they are doing or playing with.Lew, T. (2012, September 28). I will supervise and observe how the children engage in this experience, how they experiment with the materials. I will encourage during the experience and provide assistance when needed.
