Imagine that you are in your local retail store and you want to buy yourself a bar of chocolate. There are so many brands to choose from and it's hard for you to decide, but which ones are actually safe for consumption and honestly produced? There's a small chance that one of these picks is actually available, or worse yet, not even in stores. People usually don't do a background check on the chocolate bars they eat because they are too busy enjoying this sweet treat, but what they don't know is that there is another story behind it the making of this chocolate bar. Cocoa is a globally consumed product and is the main ingredient in chocolate bars; which comes from cocoa beans commonly grown in Africa. Farmers do their best to produce as much cocoa as possible to meet demand, but this often results in slavery and child labor due to unfair trade. This leads to activities that are harmful to both children and the environment, simply to meet the demands of cocoa production. But there are organizations and companies trying to reverse these negative actions to help promote safe, healthy, slavery-free cocoa products; in which studies have shown that chocolate can be good for a person's well-being. Cocoa trees are commonly grown in regions of the world near the equator and are mainly produced in Ghana and Ivory Coast in Africa, where cocoa is a cash crop, particularly in Africa. these countries (World Cocoa Foundation, 2012). Farmers rely heavily on their cocoa plantations to make a living, but recently there have been unfair trades for their crops, leading to a drastic reduction in profits.
