Essay / The Color Purple by Alice Walker - 1131
The story of The Color Purple begins with a fourteen-year-old girl named Celie who has been repeatedly raped by her stepfather. The only one she was told to talk to was God, so she did so by writing him daily letters. The book begins with the first letter with Celie describing how and why she is pregnant with her second child. This child is the result of the rape of his stepfather, Alphonso. At the time, Célie believes that Alphonso is her real father because that's what her mother always told her. His mother ends up dying soon after, and his stepfather brings home a new wife. Although he has a new wife, he continues to abuse and rape Célie. Celie never saw her children because they were taken from her by Alphonso and given to the wife of a missionary who could not have children. After the acts of rape, Celie hated and feared men, but she was not afraid of women. Celie's younger sister, Nettie, was incredibly intelligent and more educated than her, but they loved each other deeply. Shortly after Celie had her children, she was then married to a man who loved Nettie. When Nettie finally got the chance to go out and make something of herself, she took the opportunity to run away to Celie's house. Any place was better than her stepfather's house, where everyone was beaten or raped. However, Nettie soon realized that Celie was always cleaning, cooking, working in the fields, or getting beaten by her husband, Mr. _____, which was no better than where they have grown up. After Nettie lived with Celie for a while, she was kicked out by Mr. _____, also known as Albert, because she did not want to sleep with him. Celie told Nettie to go see Samuel, the pastor and missionary, because he was the only one Celie had ever seen who... middle of paper... acres of land and a convenience store for his two daughters-in-law, Celie and Nettie. Technically, Celie is still married to Mr._____ and after being away from Celie for so many years, he learns to appreciate life and women much more. When Célie returns to claim her land, she and Mr._____ become very good friends and spend more time together. When he asks Célie to come back to him, she still claims that she doesn't like men, but she will remain his good friend. Monsieur_____ accepts Célie as a friend and will always enjoy her company. He takes up sewing with Célie and while she sews pants for everyone, makes shirts for him. One day, while Celie is relaxing on her porch, sewing with Mr. _____ and Shug, Nettie, her husband, and the children arrive. Celie is so happy that she falls to the ground hugging everyone lovingly. Celie claims it's the youngest she's ever felt.
