Essay / The positive and negative aspects of foster care and adoption
Whether parenting should be regulated or permitted is a difficult question. On the one hand, the number of children who end up in foster care due to incompetent parents is staggering, as is the number of children from broken homes who fail to find their way back to life after being abused. . Even more staggering is the number of parents who impose dangerous ideologies on their children that promote sexism and racism or even ignorance on topics that science has proven wrong, like vaccines causing autism. On the other hand, how can you regulate this? Creating a test that would prove that a person is capable of having a child would be incredibly difficult. How can we say that this one is a good parent and that one is a bad parent? Do you put the potential patent in a room full of kids and see how they do? Do you give them a written test? Do you test their genes for drug or alcohol abuse? Do you send them to a psychologist for a full diagnosis, whether or not they know what they're doing? Who pays for all this? The DMV constantly faces budget cuts. A whole new licensing system for something completely different and difficult to test wouldn't pass the laugh test in Congress. Say no to plagiarism. Does a parent have to present their parental license every time they try to pick up their child from preschool? If a couple gets pregnant by accident without a license, is that child forced into foster care? I think the only positive it would bring is that it would force birth control and planned parenthood to be more widely available, perhaps even mandatory. Although it would be difficult to regulate, a person could be given birth control from the time they reach puberty until they obtain this license. But given that there is already so much controversy surrounding birth control right now, it is unlikely that it will be possible to put this into practice. Although authorization would force birth control to become more widely available, it could also be used for nefarious purposes. Same-sex couples have enough trouble trying to adopt a child. Imagine what anti-gay leaders would do with this license. In some states, it may become completely impossible for same-sex couples to even attempt to have children. It will be a long time before we can start putting something like this into practice. Another problem is that the price of such a maneuver is that it would make parenting exclusive to wealthy parents. And if rich families are the only ones giving birth to children, poorer families will disappear, and minimum wage and infrastructure jobs will be empty. A constant cycle would occur in which a poor people would disappear, then the rich would become poor and the cycle would begin again. Keep in mind: this is just a sample.
