My day started like any other normal day. I got up at 6:45, got ready and went to school. As usual, school ended at 2 p.m. and my shift started at 4 p.m. My role at Starbucks was that of a barista, and my duty, in addition to making the coffee, was to always put the customers first and make sure they were satisfied and treated fairly in the store. As I took the orders and my colleague completed them, I noticed a man standing at the back of the line. He seemed a little lost and in his own world, but I didn't think much of it and continued working on the line. As the queue got smaller, the man approached me, but for some reason my colleague felt uncomfortable. When I started talking to the man, he showed no signs that he understood me. I then realized that he was deaf and could not communicate with me. It was the first time I had met this deaf man, but my colleague had obviously met him before because he immediately expressed great dislike for the situation. My coworker has dealt with him before, but he is also agitated because he always comes in and can never communicate with him, according to my coworker at the time. My coworker kept telling me to leave him alone and not try to help him, but I knew that wasn't the right thing to do. I immediately took out my phone, opened the notes section, and handed it to the deaf man to type in his request, but he refused. I was a little shocked as to why he refused to tap on it, but I didn't give up and grabbed a notepad and pen. The deaf man grabbed the pen and notepad and wrote while my colleague yelled at me to leave him alone and let him go. I calmly told my coworker that he should go to the back room and relax while I handled the situation because I wanted to help the deaf man. I knew that if I left him there, he would feel betrayed by me and that leaving him without help would be against my morals and my integrity. Fortunately, no customers came during my interaction and I was able to help the deaf man. It turned out he wanted directions to a local supermarket, which I was able to show him by pointing and searching Google Maps. Seeing him shake my hand and walk out the door smiling left a picture painted in my head forever. I feel proud of what I did, of being able to block my rude co-worker and show integrity and choose to do the right thing by helping the deaf man. Even though I had never interacted with him, or any deaf person in my life, it felt good to accomplish something like that. This has.
