    Section 1MalariaGeneral InformationMalaria is a common infectious disease found primarily in the tropics, but can, in rare circumstances, be found in temperate zones. Depending on the circumstances, malaria can be life-threatening and cause serious illness. It is caused by parasites of the Plasmodium species (in text reference). These parasites are carried by mosquitoes that become infected after biting a person with malaria. Malaria is then spread to others when the infected mosquito bites another person. In rare cases, malaria can be passed to another person through blood transfusion, organ donation, or sharing needles. On average, around 300 to 500 million people are infected with malaria each year, with most cases occurring in sub-Saharan Africa. (referring to the text).
