Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was a literary work that addressed many different issues, not only in its time, but also today. The creation of life in Frankenstein was Shelley's symbolic warning of the new industrialized age. “It [can] also be seen as a warning about the dangers of uncontrolled application of technology and its use without appropriate morality” (Brachneos). Frankenstein's warning applies today more than ever due to the creation of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and computers that "think for themselves." The two are in a sense linked. Some would say that Victor, the character who created the monster wanting to play Od, is like today's AI computer programmers. In Frankenstein, Shelley creates two very complex characters. They embody the moral dilemmas that arise from corruption and disruption of the world's natural order. When Victor Frankenstein attended school, he became fascinated with creating a living being and began stealing body parts from university morgues. After several months of hard work, he finally brought his creation to life one stormy night. However, “now that [Victor] had finished, the beauty of the dream faded, and breathtaking horror and disgust filled [his] heart” (Chambers). Right after Victor realizes what he has done, he falls into a deep depression and has to be nursed back to health by his friend. Victor spends the rest of the story dealing with the consequences and moral issues of creating unnatural life. When he realizes that the "monster" killed his brother, even though no one believes him, he feels responsible for his brother's murder because he was responsible for the existence of the "monster".
