    When Beowulf refers to the battle with Grendel's mother, he states that "the struggle would have ended at once if God had not kept me" (Orla Murphy, 2008). This shows that he feels safer if God would help him and be on his side. God plays a big role in this, testing whether God is real or not and whether he is able to rely on him in times of need. Beowulf trusts a lot of people he isn't sure if he should because of who he is.
