    When children and adults use their hands to make, there are many steps and procedures involved in the task(s). Some craft activities may include various steps such as sorting, gathering, pinning, cutting, sewing, drawing, painting, coloring, forming and carving. Each of these tasks requires higher brain functions such as analytical thinking and problem solving. As adults age, their chances of diminishing mental capacity increase, and learning to do a trade can slow this process. Some crafts, like quilting, require a lot of analytical thinking and problem solving. Quilting designs are often complex and highly detailed, and the process of gathering and matching fabrics can be difficult. Once the craftsman has all the necessary materials, the process of putting them together can be a lot like putting together a complicated puzzle.
