Essay / The Columbine Massacre - 1426
On April 20, 1999 in Littleton, Colorado, two underage teenagers entered Columbine High School, a gun-free zone, with deadly weapons. Gun-free zones are areas where the use or possession of firearms is considered a crime (Gun Free Zone Law & Legal Definition 2014). You would think that keeping schools gun-free zones would be safer for students and teachers, but that is not the case. Why would an educational institution believe that? Committee members believe this because they have placed security cameras inside and outside the buildings, security guards to monitor what is happening, and metal detectors to make sure anyone one has no weapons before entering the building. As 17-year-old Eric Harris and 18-year-old Dylan Klebold walked the halls of Columbine High School, they shot twelve students and one teacher, and twenty-three were injured. The Columbine massacre could have been avoided if the school wasn't a gun-free zone, but if the school wasn't a gun-free zone, students and faculty could carry guns. free, which would make students uncomfortable. learn in a dangerous environment. The Columbine massacre sparked a debate about the freedom to own guns. On December 15, 1791, the Second Amendment to the Bill of Rights declared: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" (Jacobs 93). In other words, American citizens have the right to own firearms. This right was formerly freely exercised. In the absence of supermarkets, citizens used weapons to hunt for food. In the colonial era, children were more exposed to weapons than children today,...... middle of paper ......weapons at the end of the day when the students left so that there is no problem with teachers using weapons outside of school. When they allow a teacher to use a weapon, they must conduct a background check, a criminal record check on their minor, and a psychological check so that they do not consider harming themselves by trying to save the students. In conclusion, the Columbine massacre was a preventable act if people had paid attention to the behavior of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. People outside of the school, such as Robyn Andersons and Mark Manes, should have asked why they needed these guns, perhaps informed Dylan's parents, done proper research before handing Eric the handguns Harris and Dylan Klebold. If Columbine High School Teachers Were Allowed to Carry a Concealed Weapon, Many Lives Would Be Lost.
