Essay / The Othello Movie by Stuart Burge - 931
Iago is a manipulative and vengeful character who weaves a web of deception by playing on the weaknesses of others. The film Othello by Stuart Burge is an adaptation of the original play written by William Shakespeare. Shakespeare portrays Iago as a cunning, manipulative character. Burge repeatedly attempted to portray Iago's deceptive nature. This character is so strongly represented in Othello and creates the underlying storyline. Iago seeks revenge because he doesn't get the promotion he was looking for. He therefore plays on the weaknesses of others by using manipulation and deception. Burge strongly emphasized the character of Iago in the excerpt. For example, when Iago comes ashore Burge has deliberately caused a storm, when Othello arrives but the storm ceases. This symbolism relates to the chaos Iago brings to Cyprus and how his manipulation and deception will lead to stormy days ahead. Another symbolism of Iago's character is that when he wears his clothes, they are dark green and black while Othello's are white and luxurious. This is not only a comment on their wealth but also on their personality. From here we see that Iago is a darker and more mysterious man. Burge also successfully gives us a subjective point of view on almost every character in this short clip. He brought out an emotion in the character in a matter of minutes. In the cinema, the actor expressed the emotion of being jealous of Cassio and manipulative of Roderigo. Burge did this in order to form our opinions about Iago and his manipulative ways. Shortly after his arrival, Iago stands aside and carefully watches Cassio and Desdomona interact. Iago begins to make judgments and inferences about Cassio's affection for Desdomona. He makes remarks such as "We... middle of paper ......y remove Cassio from his position as lieutenant in order to receive the position himself." Iago once again plays on a character's weakness. In conclusion, from the evidence provided, it is clear that Iago is a manipulative and vengeful character who weaves a web of deception by playing on the weakness of others. Stuart Burge successfully attempted to portray this character in his deceptive nature. He achieved this by using a significant amount of visual and cinematic techniques. The extract shows Iago weaving his web of deception over Othello, Roderigo, Cassio and Desdomona to improve himself and finally receive the promotion he believed he deserved. Burge has indeed portrayed Iago in the form in which Shakespeare originally created the character and must succeed in creating a devious villain in the same way that Shakespeare created him to be in the original play..
