Essay / The Vietnam War: Communist Containment and the Cold War
Vietnam was in a state of turmoil in the mid-20th century; After gaining independence from imperialist France, the country was torn between nationalist political parties in the South and communists in the North. Although the United States had made efforts to support France during the revolution, it was inclined to support nationalist South Vietnam after the coup rather than the communist North. In doing so, the United States made an unwise political commitment to Vietnam that would lead to the longest and most unpopular war in the country's history. It is a well-known fact that the Vietnam War was the most unpopular war in our history to date, the timing of the war could not have come at a worse time; because the era of Vietnam also proved to be the era of sexual revolution, the era of love and peace. American citizens were not the only... middle of paper ...... was intended for the Soviet Union and the United States to demonstrate which country was more powerful by using the Vietnamese as a proxy; both countries have taken their rivalries to the next level. The Vietnam War also illustrated the ideological revolution of the time that American citizens were undergoing, at a time when "love and peace" was the main slogan of the new American lifestyle. The word “war” has become absolutely detestable, as demonstrated during the numerous anti-war demonstrations. I chose to write an article about the Vietnam War because I believe that the Vietnam War was the most representative event of the era. It was a war that threatened to dismantle our government, a war that mirrored other events in Latin America and Europe involving the Soviet Union and the United States; and a symbol of how far the United States was willing to go to win the Cold War.
