    19th century London is famous for being the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. But that's not the only reason the Victorians are famous, they are also known for their high crime rates and for being home to several notorious serial killers, like Jack the Ripper. London was also overcrowded, which some believe could be the cause of the high crime rate. Although urbanization had an effect on crime, an incompetent police force and media that glorified crime also contributed to the high crime rate. Before the Industrial Revolution, most of Britain's population lived and worked on farms, but skilled laborers and artisans made up a significant portion of crime. integral part of the British economy (Martello). The country was particularly wealthy due to its large market economy. Pre-industrial boom, products were made at home, by hand or with small, less advanced machines (History.com Staff). This method was far too slow for a growing market. This led to inventions like the Spinning Jenny to help speed up production and satisfy buyers. The Spinning Jenny was just the beginning of technological progress, but you can't have an industrial revolution without something to fuel it (Martello). Coal was ideal because London had abundant resources, thanks to its colonial advantages, and because coal provided more energy than wood. Although these advances were considered beneficial for the most part, they also had many disadvantages (“Why the Industrial Revolution Happened in Britain”). The most well-known impact of the Industrial Revolution was child labor, but there were other consequences as well.
