  • Essay / Legalization of euthanasia - 1991

The legalization of euthanasia has been a controversial issue for years; Studies have shown that arguments in the euthanasia debate often depend on the process used to take the patient's life. There are countless thoughts surrounding the issue of euthanasia and whether or not it should be legalized. According to the Encyclopedia of American Law, euthanasia is classified as a class of criminal homicide (Debate.org, para. 3). However, not all killings are considered unlawful. In today's society, murder is seen as excusable when used as a criminal sanction, but inexcusable when carried out for any other reason. In most places, non-voluntary euthanasia is considered illegal and involuntary euthanasia is considered criminal homicide. Protesters often claim that laws that contradict euthanasia constitute government-sanctioned suffering, but this assertion would be tantamount to saying that laws prohibiting the marketing of contaminated food constitute government-enforced starvation. It is suggested that euthanasia be legalized, but that there be a strict decree on who is able to receive it. According to Webster's Dictionary, euthanasia is known as the painless killing by act or omission of a dependent human being suffering from an incurable and painful disease. disease (Webster). In other words, if death is not proposed, it is not an act of euthanasia. The word euthanasia is derived from the Greek term “eu” and “thanatos” which means “good death”. In various countries, euthanasia is called assisted suicide. However, assisted suicide is different from euthanasia. Assisted suicide is when the patient is in complete control of the process that leads to death because he or she is the one committing the act of suicide while the other...... middle of paper .. .... the patient requests that he be euthanized, what would he do? He said: “If a spa patient asks me to help them die, I won’t do it! I don't mind helping them feel comfortable, but helping them die I wouldn't do it. In conclusion, euthanasia is a very controversial topic with pros and cons. Sure, everyone has to die at some point, but why do people have to suffer? It is easy for people, society and the government to judge a person by bringing up all the negative issues. However, if people walked a mile in the shoes of suffering victims, feeling what they feel, our thoughts would be different. Humans tend to criticize each other instead of helping each other. Euthanasia helps people who are suffering. Everyone deserves a second chance, even if that second chance is the result of death. Sometimes a second chance doesn't always mean a happy ending.
