The purpose of this article is to analyze and discuss the supply chain efficiency of target stores. Target was founded in 1902 by George Draper Dayton who, after partnering with the owner of Goodfellow Dry Goods Company for a year, decided he wanted to become more involved. So he bought Goodfellows and renamed it Dayton Dry Goods Company. After purchasing the store, Mr. Dayton remained in management until his death in 1938. By this time the store had gone through many changes, including a name change in 1911 from the Dayton Dry Goods Company to The Dayton Company, as well as an addition of the Dayton Foundation in 1918. After Mr. Dayton's death, the family continued to operate the business until 1983, when the last two Dayton executives retired , ending 80 years of family management of Dayton (Target Corporation, 2014). Since the beginning, the Target store supply chain has been based on the personal principles of owner/founder Mr. Dayton. These principles include being known as a retail chain that not only offers reliable merchandise to its customers, but also as a retail chain that offers fair business practices and a spirit of giving (Target Corporation, 2014). Based on these principles, the store then came up with the slogan "Expect more, without paying." This slogan represents their continued commitment to giving and providing their customers with value, quality and service, all in a fun and exciting environment (Target Corporation, 2014).
