Essay / Protecting the Daintree Rainforest - 779
1. Destroying the habitat of different plants and animals, they no longer have a place to live. Their food source and nutrients are removed and have nowhere to go. These organisms will disappear and there will be a loss of diversity in this ecosystem. This ecosystem can then begin to collapse as habitats disappear and plants and animals no longer have a home. Without habitat in which organisms can live, there will be very little diversity.2. a) The Daintree Rainforest at Cape Tribulation in Far North Queensland is diverse in many ways. It is home to 12 of the world's 19 families of primitive plants (Cairns Today, 2007). The forest covers an area of 1,100 square kilometers and is approximately eighty kilometers wide. This dense, lush rainforest has the most diversity than any other rainforest in Australia and the world. The Daintree is also home to rare and endangered plant and animal species. The importance of this ecosystem is very high. This ecosystem contributes to the overall health of this plant in several ways. Diversity contributes to the breakdown of pollution and helps control the climate, to name a few. This tropical forest is also a formidable “carbon sink”. It has many photosynthetic plants and this allows the control of carbon dioxide (CO2). Plants absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and release oxygen (O2).b) Logging has had an impact on this particular ecosystem. There are century-old trees and their wood is sold at high prices. After World War II, Australia's economy was booming and timber was in high demand. A number of sawmills have been built near Daintree with the aim of felling the forest for use in the infra... middle of paper ... and are selling their land back to the government. The government has been slow to act and previous government parties have been in favor of cutting down the rainforest. I think the efforts to save the Daintree Forest have been good, but the government will need to continue to buy back this land to make up for what happened to the forest before it was listed as World Heritage. /location/Daintree/listingResultsView.html?categoryId=233http://www.daintreevillage.asn.au/daintree_rainforest.htmlhttp://www.sgaonline.org.au/?p=726http://www.therainforests.info/ landscape/daintree.htmhttp://www.daintreevillage.asn.au/mangroves.htmlhttp://www.globalissues.org/article/170/why-is-biodiversity-important-who-careshttp://www.green. net.au/quoll/forests/daintree.htmlhttp://www.daintreecoast.com/isiospermum.html
