The Templars The Templars have been portrayed as evil knights and only concerned with their glory in video games (i.e. Assassins Creed) and films (i.e. say the Kingdom of Heaven). What happened to them and their treasure has been the subject of much speculation since their fall in 1314. They have become such a part of popular fiction that many people don't know what to believe when it comes to of the Templars. So who were they? the Templars and what really happened to them. Between the years 1100 and 1122, the Poor Knights (or Fellow Soldiers) of Christ and the Temple of Solomon, more commonly known as the Order of the Temple or Knights of the Temple, were founded in Jerusalem by nine original Knights. These nine original Knights came together to protect pilgrims as they traveled to and from the various holy sites of Overseas. Before their existence, Christians who visited the holy lands were robbed and sometimes killed by the Saracen bandits who lived in and around these lands. Hugues de Payen of Champagne and Godfrey de St. Omer of Picardy were granted an audience with King Baldwin II, then ruler of Jerusalem. It was at this meeting that Hugh and Godfrey suggested that they and seven other Knights form an organization to protect pilgrims who came to the holy lands. They also told the king that they did not want to do this like ordinary knights. They wish to do this by living under the role of Saint Augustine in a small monastic community. King Baldwin liked the idea and gave them accommodation on the site of the ancient temple, now al-Aqsa. This was the birth of the Templars. Not much is known about the early years of their existence.
